Designing a platform that connects relatives of older people with care and well-being professionals, for tailored activities at home or in care facilities.
At a glance
Moving from a hand-run service, with connections made one by one, to a real platform. For a sensitive audience: frail older people and families who are often worried.
The brand guidelines and components, built from the existing illustrations, then the journeys for relatives and professionals. In 2024, a second mission to introduce recurring activities. The platform is live.
Bring in the full needs-assessment questionnaire provided by JuaCare earlier: in the first version, several questions about the older person's tastes and wishes were still missing.
In this field, every word matters. Reviews with the JuaCare team changed a lot of copy.
JuaCare starts from a simple observation: the services offered to dependent older people mostly cover vital needs, eating, washing. The human, relational side comes second, for lack of time or money, or because families don't know other services exist.
So JuaCare offers non-drug activities led by qualified professionals: gardening, animal-assisted sessions, music and singing, gentle exercise, socio-aesthetics, cognitive stimulation… Activities that used to be found mostly in care facilities, offered here at home or in institutions, with three goals: keeping a positive self-image, breaking isolation and offering pleasant, soothing moments.
At first, everything ran through the showcase website, built by the founders, and connections made by hand. With charrette.club, I designed the brand guidelines and the UX/UI of the platform: a logged-in area with online booking, now live.
JuaCare already had illustrations, made by an illustrator. I built on them to create the brand guidelines: the Lora and Tahoma typefaces, a colour palette drawn from the illustrations, and soft shapes, circles and overlaps, used throughout the interface.
From these guidelines, I created the platform's components: buttons, appointment cards, badges for older people and professionals, forms and modals.
The client isn't the older person, it's often a son or daughter who lives far away, works, and finds it hard to see a parent decline. The journey had to be simple and reassuring, and never feel like filling in a medical file.
At sign-up, everyone picks a profile: relative, professional or institution. The relative then creates a profile for each older person they look after, with a questionnaire about where they live, their autonomy, their tastes and their wishes. JuaCare encourages filling it in together whenever possible.
The dashboard has three columns: upcoming appointments, professionals already met, to book them again easily, and dates to remember, such as workshops and talks for relatives.
The relative picks the person concerned, the activity, the place and the times. The JuaCare team then handles the request and looks for one to three professionals suited to the person's profile: type of activity, area, level of autonomy and availability. The relative chooses, confirms and pays online.
Choosing an assisted match over an automatic one was deliberate: on such a sensitive subject, people stay in the loop.
Professionals have their own journey. To complete their account, each one has to sign the JuaCare charter, then fill in a profile in several steps: profession, activities offered, rates, area, qualifications. The JuaCare team then approves each account.
For each profession, default activities are suggested: professionals tick the ones they offer and can mention other skills in a free-text field. Entries are saved as they go, so nothing is lost if they leave the form halfway through.
An activity that does people good works best when it's regular. JuaCare brought me back for a second mission: making it possible to set up a recurring activity in a single request.
The relative chooses between a one-off or a recurring activity, then the frequency, the duration and their preferred days and times. On the payment side, a matching fee is paid once, then payment is taken automatically after each activity, with no commitment.
After each session, the professional fills in a short questionnaire that becomes a report the relative can read: how the session went, what the person seemed to enjoy, the signs observed (a smile, concentration, a sense of calm) and what comes next. What was said during the session stays confidential.
From this report, the relative can renew the service in one click, and switch to a recurring activity if they wish.
My work involved:
A platform that is now live, and a project where design happens as much in the words as in the screens. Designing for families caring for a frail parent takes gentleness, clarity and a lot of listening: that's what the reviews with the JuaCare team taught me, screen after screen.
